Holding Life and Loss: My Postpartum Story

Every postpartum is unique, and my story began long before my baby arrived.

It started the day I told my mum I was pregnant.
She told me she had breast cancer… and would need to start chemo, followed by surgery a few months later.

So my entire pregnancy held two realities at once. The arrival of new life and the very real possibility of losing my mother, and yet, in the midst of that, I loved being pregnant.

Yes, there was discomfort, of course.
But more than anything, I felt embodied, alive, like an incredible goddess growing a child, and so grateful to be having a baby of my own, after having supported hundreds of women.

Especially because I had once been told that I might not be able to. (That’s a story for another day.)

Even with the emotional weight I was carrying, I felt deeply connected to my body and my baby. But looking back, I can see that my pregnancy held more stress than it should have.

When postpartum came, I thought I was prepared. I had been supporting women for over a decade through birth, and a little through postpartum too. At that point (19 years ago), I was sharing the basics:

Fill your freezer with nourishing meals.
Be mindful of visitors.
Rest as much as possible.

And I did implement these.I honoured my 40 days at home. I had one visitor a day, either morning or afternoon. They would bring a meal, or ingredients if they couldn’t cook what I liked. In many ways, I did what I knew.

And still, it was hard, it is one of the hardest times becoming a mother, worrying about everything, is he eating enough, was that visitor a bit sick, I am exhausted.

Two weeks after my son was born, my mom had surgery to remove her right breast.

I was in that tender, raw postpartum window, while also holding the fear that I might lose her.

It was difficult to be fully present. Part of me was with my baby and part of me was bracing for loss.

And this is why I’m sharing all of this.

Because postpartum is not just about the baby.
It’s about the mother.
Her body.
Her heart.
Her life.

And life doesn’t pause just because you’ve given birth.

Over the years and especially after my trip to Ecuador, and further postpartum training, something deepened in me. I realised just how much support is truly needed in postpartum. Not just the basics. But real, grounded, practical, emotional support. Support that holds the fullness of a woman’s experience.

And this is how my Preparing for Postpartum webinar was born.
