For many years, HypnoBirthing has been viewed with a mix of curiosity and scepticism. Is it airy-fairy? Just positive thinking? Something only “natural birth types” do?
But after teaching the Marie Mongan Method for 17 years and now evolving that work into my own Conscious Birth Antenatal Course.
I can tell you this:
HypnoBirthing is not magic.
It’s practice.
It’s physiology.
And it’s about coming back to what we’ve always known deep down:
The body knows how to birth.
What Is HypnoBirthing®?
At its heart, HypnoBirthing® is about removing fear, so that the body can do what it was designed to do, birth calmly and instinctively.
The Marie Mongan Method offers a framework of tools and knowledge, including:
- Breathing techniques for each stage of labour
- Guided relaxation and visualisation
- Birth education that demystifies the process
- Nutrition and body awareness
- Involvement of partners and family
- Emotional preparation and mindset work
It’s not hypnosis in the stage-show sense.
It’s about learning to enter a deep, focused, altered state of awareness, one you can call on during labour to stay connected and calm.
Where It All Began
What many people don’t realise is that the Marie Mongan Method of HypnoBirthing® has its roots in the work of Dr Grantly Dick-Read, a British obstetrician who wrote Childbirth Without Fear back in the 1920s.
He was ahead of his time.
Back then, we didn’t know about endorphins, or how the nervous system responds to stress and fear. But Grantly knew from experience that the more a woman is able to relax and practise relaxation the more effective her labour and birth could be.
He noticed a simple but profound pattern:
Fear creates tension.
Tension creates pain.
Pain reinforces fear.
Marie Mongan took his wisdom and translated it into a teachable, repeatable practice for women and their families. She gave us a method to prepare not just our bodies but our minds, our nervous systems, our relationships, and our beliefs.
And today, science has caught up. We now understand that deep relaxation activates brainwaves and hormonal responses that make labour more efficient, more bearable, and often more joyful.
The Science of Relaxation in Labour
When you practise relaxation consistently during pregnancy, you’re teaching your body and brain how to respond in labour.
You move from busy, thinking beta brainwaves into calmer alpha and theta states the same states your brain enters in meditation, sleep, and yes, labour. In this state, your body can release oxytocin and endorphins, the hormones that drive contractions, ease discomfort, and help you feel safe.
This is why practice matters. You can’t expect to suddenly “relax” in labour if your system doesn’t know how to get there.
That’s the beauty of HypnoBirthing®, it gives you the tools.
More Than a Method, A Philosophy
Marie’s work isn’t just about techniques. It’s about changing the way we view birth.
The core philosophy is that:
- In the absence of special medical circumstances, birth works.
- The body knows what to do and the more we trust it, the smoother the process can be.
- Families deserve respect and informed choice, not fear and control.
- Birth is not a medical emergency.
Even if a birth takes place in a hospital or involves some medical support, the philosophy still holds: you can birth from a place of calm and confidence.
From HypnoBirthing® to Conscious Birth: A Natural Evolution
While I deeply honour the Marie Mongan Method and taught it for over 17 years, over time, I noticed something: women needed more.
More embodiment.
More real-life tools.
More flexibility and depth.
More space to ask questions and prepare emotionally, not just mentally.
HypnoBirthing gave us a beautiful foundation, a shift in perspective, a language of softness, and the power of relaxation. But birth, especially in today’s world, can be messy, unpredictable, and intense. Families are navigating modern medical systems, busy schedules, fragmented support, and inherited fears. And in that context, many needed something more practical, adaptable, and grounded.
That’s why I created the Conscious Birth Antenatal Course.
It carries the spirit and intention of HypnoBirthing but is designed to meet women where they are now. It’s a more embodied, holistic, and user-friendly approach, one that blends ancient wisdom, modern science, emotional preparation, and practical tools you can actually use during labour.
Here’s what makes Conscious Birth different:
- It’s embodied. not just learning with your mind, but practising with your breath, body, and voice.
- It’s real, acknowledging that birth can unfold in many ways, and you’re supported through it all.
- It’s practical, you and your partner leave with tools that make sense, feel natural, and work in the moment.
- It’s inclusive of emotion and energy, how you feel and what you believe is just as important as what you know.
- It’s integrated, weaving in breathwork, movement, mindset, spiritual reflection, and real-world strategy.
This isn’t about replacing HypnoBirthing, it’s about building on its legacy.
Conscious Birth is the evolution of my years supporting women, witnessing what truly helps in the birthing space, and creating a course that feels real, wise, and deeply woman-centred.
Final Thoughts
So… is HypnoBirthing hocus pocus?
Not at all.
It’s a remembering of what birth truly is.
It’s a return to trust.
And it’s the science-backed reality that when fear steps out of the room, the body opens and birth flows.
