Closing the Bones Ceremony

A sacred postpartum rite of honouring, healing, and remembering.

A sacred ceremony

The Closing of the Bones is a sacred postpartum ceremony that honours the powerful transition a woman undergoes through childbirth.

Rooted in ancient traditions, it is a deeply personal ritual that offers emotional, physical, and energetic healing.

I offer this ceremony most often between 4 and 12 weeks after birth, though it brings deep healing even years later. It supports gentle integration, honours the threshold crossed, and offers a space to soften, be held, and remember who you are.

A Ceremony of Closing, Holding, and Reclaiming

Fully clothed and held in a nurturing space, the mother receives slow, intentional bodywork rotating into the joints, releasing tension, and encouraging energy to flow with ease.

The session ends with clothes gently wrapped and tied around parts of the body often the head, shoulders, womb space, knees, and feet. Each one acknowledged with reverence and spoken blessings. This sacred “closing” supports the body in returning to itself after the openness of pregnancy and birth. It helps seal energy, restore balance, and honour the emotional, physical, and spiritual work of motherhood.

This is more than a technique; it is a blessing. A holding. A moment to be truly seen and celebrated.

Each Ceremony is Personal and Intimate

No two ceremonies are the same. I bring my full presence, intuition, and care into each experience. You’ll be nourished with warm oils, gentle bodywork, soul-soothing touch, and heartfelt affirmations. We may include sacred smoke, grounding practices, or quiet moments for reflection.

It is a ceremony where the mother is finally the one held.
Recently, I supported a mother whose child is now 18 and she still felt the profound healing of this work. Whether your baby is weeks or years old, if you feel the call, trust it.

A Gift from Lineage and Learning

While I’ve been offering this ceremony for several years, my time in Ecuador in May 2024 deepened everything. There, I learned from traditional midwives and wise women, including the beautiful Martha Arotingo, whose teachings I carry with deep gratitude.

I also honour the guidance of Dr Gauri Lowe here in South Africa, whose work continues to inspire me.
This ceremony is now available to all women not only as a postpartum rite, but also as a reclamation for anyone who has journeyed through birth, loss, transition, or transformation.

What women are saying

Hear from women who have experienced the closing of the bones ceremony.

“I am beyond grateful for the incredible journey from birthing my beautiful son to being reborn as a mother. This past week, I had the privilege of spending time with a wonderful mentor and teacher, Theoni, who guided me to embrace this space and recognise the profound journey I’m on.

The Closing the Bones ceremony she offers is truly something special. I feel so blessed to have her support and presence as I navigate the path of motherhood. Having her hold this space for me has been a gift that words can hardly capture.”
-Virgilia Baxter

“Theoni has been such a steady, nurturing support through both of my pregnancies, home births, and postpartum journeys.

From Kahuna massage and craniosacral therapy to breastfeeding guidance and emotional support, she has held me through it all.

Even a year postpartum with my second baby, her Closing the Bones ceremony reminded me how deeply her care supports every phase of motherhood. I’m so grateful for her.”
